Hazel's weather question

Why can one mountain have four kinds of weather?

Mountains do more than stand in the path of the wind. They can lift moving air, cool it, and help make the clouds that carry rain or snow.

2 Air rises and cools
3 Rain or snow forms
01

Moist air arrives

Winds can carry damp Pacific air toward the Coast Mountains.

02

The slope lifts it

The mountain pushes that moving air higher into the atmosphere.

03

Rising air cools

Cooler air cannot hold as much invisible water vapour.

04

Clouds take shape

Water gathers into droplets or ice crystals, making cloud, rain, or snow.

Small flowers with mountain-sized skills

Above the forest, the growing season is short and the weather can be cold, bright, and windy. Alpine plants use clever shapes to survive.

Stay low

Growing close to the ground helps plants avoid the strongest gusts.

Grow quickly

Flowers open during the brief warm season when pollinators are active.

Share the trail

Bees and butterflies depend on these blooms, so visitors should leave them rooted.

Explorer rule: Stay on marked paths so fragile alpine plants are not crushed.

How does a gondola climb a mountain?

A gondola does not drive uphill like a car. A moving rope, strong towers, carefully guided wheels, and station machinery work together.

  1. 1
    The haul rope moves

A powered rope pulls cabins steadily up and down the mountain.

  2. 2
    Sheaves guide the rope

Rows of grooved wheels support and guide the rope over each tower.

  3. 3
    The cabin slows inside

In a detachable system, the cabin leaves the fast rope and moves slowly through the station.

  4. 4
    Teams watch the weather

Operators monitor wind and conditions, pausing service when safety requires it.

Curious explorers ask

Whistler mountain weather FAQ

Can it really snow on Whistler Mountain in summer?

Yes. High mountain air can be much colder than the village, and snow can remain near peaks or fall during a cold weather change. Conditions vary, so families should check the official mountain report before travelling upward.

Why does temperature usually drop as we climb?

The air pressure becomes lower with height. Rising air spreads out and cools, which is why a mountaintop can feel very different from the valley below.

Why are alpine flowers often small and low?

A low shape helps many alpine plants avoid the strongest wind and hold warmth near the ground. They also complete their growing and flowering during a short mountain summer.

What makes a gondola slow down at a station?

Many modern gondola cabins temporarily detach from the fast-moving haul rope inside the station. A slower conveyor guides them through the boarding area before the grip safely reconnects to the rope.
